Plug-in home batteries promise to open household energy storage to people who cannot fit a large wired system. That includes renters, flat owners, people without a suitable wall, and households that want to start with a smaller unit.
The idea is simple. Charge a small battery when electricity is cheap, then use that stored power when prices rise. Some products also promise to work with balcony solar, support local flexibility services, or join many homes into one virtual power plant.
The UK market is less simple. Portable power stations, plug-in batteries, installed home batteries and grid-connected flexibility services are often discussed as though they are the same thing. They are not. The product type, wiring method, tariff, landlord position and route to grid compliance all change the answer.
We measured how three answer engines handled those choices. The fixed set covered 55 questions and produced 462 answers across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overview on 19 August 2026.
Which battery brands lead UK AI answers?
Octopus Energy led the broad measured set with 27.92% visibility and 29.29% share of voice. EcoFlow followed with 21.21% visibility and 18.30% share of voice. Tesla Energy ranked third with 18.61% visibility and 12.04% share of voice.
The next group was GivEnergy at 14.72% visibility, Anker SOLIX at 12.55%, Axle Energy at 9.31% and Kraken at 7.14%.
Those numbers mix several buying jobs. Octopus, Tesla and GivEnergy benefit from strong home energy brands. EcoFlow and Anker are easier to retrieve for small, portable and renter friendly products. Axle and Kraken appear more often when the question moves from one household to a flexible fleet.
The direct plug-in group is narrower. EcoFlow reached 64.29% visibility on renter and plug-in questions in this sample, Anker SOLIX reached 41.07%, and Octopus Energy reached 35.71%.
The figures show why category wording matters. A brand can lead on home battery savings and disappear on flexibility markets. Another can lead on portable power but have little evidence for socket backfeed in Great Britain.
What counts as a plug-in home battery?
Four product groups now sit close together in search results:
- Portable power stations. These charge from a wall socket and power devices through outlets on the unit. They do not usually feed energy back through the home's fixed circuits.
- Plug-in home batteries. These aim to charge and discharge through a normal socket, so stored power can support the home. That backfeed function is the part that needs the clearest UK rule and safety route.
- Installed home batteries. Products from Tesla, GivEnergy and other established makers connect through a qualified installation and can integrate with solar, tariffs and backup systems.
- Virtual power plants. These combine many batteries or other flexible devices so they can respond as one fleet when the grid needs help.
Buyers should ask which group a product belongs to before comparing price, power or payback.
What is the UK legal position in 2026?
The UK has moved on plug-in solar. In March 2026, the government said households would be able to use small plug-in solar systems within months, subject to a product and installation framework. The announcement is available on gov.uk.
Plug-in batteries are a separate case. In May 2026, Regen said Great Britain did not yet have the clear legal and technical route needed for battery systems that feed power back through a standard socket. Its note called for proportionate rules that would let renters and people in flats take part while keeping homes and networks safe.
That distinction matters. A product can have a safe battery chemistry and still need clear rules for the socket, circuit protection, export control, network notification, insurance and landlord consent.
Anyone considering a product should ask for the current compliance status in writing. Look for the exact UKCA or CE position, the applicable electrical standard, the approved connection method, the need for an electrician, and the process for the local network operator.
Which products are closest to the plug-in promise?
Windfall Energy presents a 2.5 kWh plug-in battery for flats and renters, with app control, a ten year warranty and a standard socket connection. It is one of the closest UK product examples because the pitch centres on homes that cannot fit a normal battery.
Octopus Energy announced Nook in June 2026. Its Nook Cube starts at 2 kWh, plugs into a normal socket and can expand to 10.5 kWh. Octopus says UK availability will begin in 2027. The brand, tariff base and service reach give it a large distribution advantage before the product is widely available.
EcoFlow and Anker already have strong recognition in portable power. Anker's own UK guidance is also cautious about backfeed, noting that a wall-socket battery is not yet a simple buy and use choice under the current framework. That caution is useful. It separates a portable unit from a system that supplies the home's fixed circuits.
Installed products remain the more established option for homeowners who can change the property. They cost more and need a site-specific installation, but their grid connection, tariff integration and backup behaviour are easier to define today.
Do small batteries save enough money?
Savings depend on usable capacity, daily cycling, tariff spread, efficiency and whether the battery can take part in paid flexibility. A 2 kWh unit cannot replace a large home battery, but it may cover a meaningful share of evening demand in a small flat.
The safest payback model uses a household's real half-hourly data. Buyers should check:
- how many kilowatt hours can shift from the cheap period to the costly period
- the round trip efficiency of the unit
- the number of useful cycles each year
- the tariff spread after standing charges and fees
- whether the product can export, and under which rule
- whether grid service income is guaranteed, estimated or unavailable
A headline annual saving without those inputs is hard to test. Any calculator should show its assumptions and should never treat flexibility income as certain.
Why do small batteries matter to the grid?
The household case is only half the story. Thousands of small batteries can act together, charge when the local network has spare capacity and reduce demand when it is constrained.
That model already has larger-scale competitors. Axle Energy says it connects more than 300,000 devices and controls 2 GW of shiftable load. GridBeyond says its platform covers more than 1,400 sites, over 5 GW of load and 900 MW of storage. Piclo runs flexibility marketplaces, while Electron supplies market software to utilities and network operators.
The hardest claim is not that a fleet can shift power. It is that the fleet can release usable capacity at a specific constrained location, under a contract the local network and the connecting site can rely on.
Ofgem shows why the claim matters. In July 2026 it said demand connection applications had risen from 41 GW to 125 GW in under a year, with data centre proposals driving much of the rise. The regulator's update on queue reform is available at ofgem.gov.uk.
Distributed batteries could help at the margin while networks build larger reinforcements. They will not remove the need for substations, cables and planning. A credible offer must state the location, response time, duration, availability and network service it can provide.
Where do answer engines get their evidence?
Public sources dominate the factual frame. Across the measured set, gov.uk received 225 citations, ofgem.gov.uk received 166 and neso.energy received 117. National Grid pages received another 69.
Independent guides also shape the buying answer. haboenergy.co.uk received 168 citations and plug-insolar.co.uk received 135. YouTube received 132, which shows the value of a clear visual explanation for a product people have not seen installed.
Official product pages then supply specifications, warranty terms and compatibility. Octopus Energy received 103 citations across the set.
For a battery company, the path is clear. Publish the technical answer on its own site, cite the public rule behind it, and earn independent coverage that tests the claim in plain language.
What should a buyer check before reserving one?
- Is it a portable power station, a plug-in battery or an installed home battery?
- Can it feed the home's fixed circuits, and what rule permits that method?
- Does the local network need notice or approval?
- Does a renter need written landlord consent?
- Which UK safety and electrical standards apply?
- What usable capacity and continuous output does the warranty cover?
- What happens during a power cut?
- Which savings assumptions are fixed, and which depend on a tariff or grid service?
- Who owns the device, data and flexibility revenue?
- What happens if the product or service closes?
The bottom line
Plug-in home batteries could bring energy storage to millions of UK homes that cannot fit an installed system. The category has real value, but the route from product promise to safe socket connection still needs exact wording and public proof.
