UK trades and gas compliance software carried no ChatGPT ads at all for the first two weeks of our tracking window. Then, from 17 July, sponsored placements started appearing and kept accelerating: the final three days of the window carried 29 of the 60 ad-bearing answers we recorded across the whole month, roughly half a month's ad volume inside three days. We track this category using our own daily multi-engine tracking, which includes ChatGPT ad tracking, across 27 UK trades platforms, including Payaca, Fergus, Tradify, Commusoft, Joblogic, BigChange, ServiceM8, simPRO, Powered Now and Jobber. Sponsored placements currently appear on ChatGPT, and for two weeks this category simply did not have any.
TL;DR
- Zero to accelerating: UK trades and gas compliance software had no ads across the first two weeks of our tracking window. The first ad appeared 7 July, then nothing for nine days, then continuous activity from 17 July, with the final three days carrying 29 of the month's 60 ad-bearing answers.
- Real rivals are bidding: Powered Now, Tradify, Commusoft, Joblogic and Jobber all appear as advertisers on category queries like "best joblogic alternative uk" and "best cp12 app uk", not just network fill.
- Overall coverage stayed low: only 3.6% of the 1,650 answers we scored across the category carried an ad, the second-lowest coverage of the five categories we track.
- Organic growth kept climbing at the same time: the category leader's organic visibility rose from 21.4% to 29.9% over four weeks, evidence that winning the organic answer no longer means owning the answer.

What did the ad timeline in this category actually look like?
Our window started with two flat weeks. Zero of the answers we scored for UK trades and gas compliance software carried a sponsored placement in that opening stretch. The first ad appeared on 7 July. Then the category went quiet again: nine straight days with nothing, 8 July through 16 July. From 17 July the pattern broke. Ads appeared continuously, and the daily volume kept climbing rather than settling into a steady rate. By the close of our window, the final three days alone carried 29 of the 60 ad-bearing answers for the whole month. Put another way, close to half of everything we measured across four weeks landed inside the last three days.
We are reporting what appeared and when. We are not asserting that any platform decided to start advertising on a given date, and we are not guessing at why the acceleration happened. The pattern is the finding: flat, then a first appearance, then a long gap, then a fast, compounding ramp.
Which platforms are actually paying to appear?
We sampled 34 of the 60 ad-bearing answers in this category in depth. Seven advertisers account for most of the volume we captured, and the rest is a long tail of one appearance each.
| Advertiser | Appearances (of 34 sampled) | Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Expert Market | 4 | quotes.expertmarket.co.uk |
| Powered Now | 3 | powerednow.com |
| Tradify | 3 | tradifyhq.com |
| Commusoft | 2 | commusoft.com |
| Vaillant UK | 2 | vaillant.co.uk |
| Sky | 2 | sky.com |
| pdf.net | 2 | pdf.net |
The rest of the sample is a single appearance each: Jobber, Payhawk, Citation, HiBob, giffgaff, Itransition, Barclaycard, Cin7, ApprovalMax, British Gas, Monday.com, Canon, Hammock, intavia.ai, youcanbook.me, Joblogic and Clearsight Energy. Roughly half of the sampled ad slots go to genuine trades and compliance competitors. The other half is unrelated network fill: broadband deals, credit cards, printers, HR software, none of it built for a plumber or a gas engineer.
What are the ads actually saying?
The comparative creative is the tell. This is not generic lead-gen copy. It names the rival directly, or leads with the exact compliance and trade language a buyer searches for.
| Ad title | Advertiser |
|---|---|
| Jobber vs. ServiceTitan | Jobber |
| Field Service Management Software | Commusoft | Commusoft |
| UK's #1 Invoicing Software | 14-Day Free Trial | Tradify |
| Job Management Software For UK Trades | Powered Now | Powered Now |
| The Software Behind 3,000+ UK Field Teams | Joblogic |
Jobber's line runs a straight competitor comparison. Tradify and Powered Now both lead with UK-specific claims, a free trial and a UK field-team count, aimed squarely at a buyer comparing named alternatives, not a generic search.
What is anyone actually typing to trigger these ads?
These are not generic dinner-party trades questions. They are the kind of query a plumber or gas engineer types when actively evaluating software: "best joblogic alternative uk", "best cp12 app uk", "one app to replace tradify and gas certificate software", "best crm for tradespeople uk". Every one of those is a comparison or replacement query, the exact moment a competitor's ad in front of the answer is worth the most.
Why isn't winning the organic answer enough anymore?
While ads were building toward that final three-day surge, the category's leading platform, unnamed in our data by design, was also growing its organic visibility, the share of tracked answers where it gets named without paying for the placement. That figure moved from 21.4% in the week commencing 22 June to 29.9% in the week commencing 20 July, with a dip to 19.6% at one point in between. Roughly a 40% relative gain in four weeks. Under different circumstances that would be an unqualified win. Here it landed in the same window where a third of the category's ad-bearing answers for the whole month were arriving in the final three days.
Ranking first organically and being the only name a user sees are no longer the same outcome. An ad now sits alongside, or ahead of, the organic answer a platform worked to earn.
How does UK trades compare with the other categories we track?
We run this same tracking across five categories, and the spread between them is stark: a 40x difference between the most and least monetised category we measure. UK trades and gas compliance software sits near the quiet end at 3.6% overall ad coverage, 60 ad-bearing answers of the 1,650 we scored, well below waste and hauling software at 77.8% and entity resolution and identity data infrastructure at 73.0%, but still ahead of London hospitality at 1.9%.
| Category | Value |
|---|---|
| Waste, dumpster and hauling software | 77.8% |
| Entity resolution and identity data infrastructure | 73% |
| Finance automation, treasury, AP and payroll | 7.1% |
| UK trades job management and gas compliance software (highlighted) | 3.6% |
| London hospitality, wine bars and restaurants | 1.9% |
What makes UK trades notable is not where it sits on that spread. It is that the spread itself moved inside a single tracking window. A category can go from effectively zero to meaningfully monetised in three weeks.
What should UK trades software platforms take from this?
A category that was ad-free for two weeks is not a category that stays ad-free. Powered Now, Tradify, Commusoft, Joblogic and Jobber are already bidding on each other's brand and category terms inside ChatGPT answers, and the queries they are winning, alternative searches, compliance app comparisons, are exactly the ones a buyer types right before choosing. Organic visibility is still worth building. It just stopped being the only line of defence the moment paid placements arrived.
FAQ
Are UK trades and gas compliance software platforms advertising inside ChatGPT answers? Yes, but the timing is unusual. The category carried zero ads across the first two weeks of our tracking window, then moved to continuous, accelerating ad activity from 17 July, with the final three days alone carrying 29 of the month's 60 ad-bearing answers.
Which UK trades platforms are running ads in AI search answers? Powered Now, Tradify, Commusoft, Joblogic and Jobber are the clearest genuine category competitors advertising, alongside Expert Market, Vaillant UK and Sky. Roughly half of the ad slots we sampled go to real trades and compliance rivals; the rest is unrelated network fill.
What does the "Jobber vs. ServiceTitan" ad mean for UK trades software buyers? It shows an advertiser naming a rival directly inside the ad creative rather than running generic lead-gen copy. Other examples from our tracking include Tradify's "UK's #1 Invoicing Software | 14-Day Free Trial" and Powered Now's "Job Management Software For UK Trades".
How much of the UK trades category's AI search answers carry ads overall? 3.6% of the 1,650 answers we scored, 60 ad-bearing answers in total. That is the second-lowest coverage of the five categories in our tracking, though the trend inside the window was sharply upward.
Is organic AI search visibility still worth pursuing for UK trades software brands? Yes. The category leader's organic visibility rose from 21.4% to 29.9% over four weeks during the same window ads began appearing. Organic and paid are running in parallel now, not as substitutes for each other.
Disclosure: Schmitdy is our own AI search service at AI Heroes. This data comes from the same daily multi-engine tracking, which includes ChatGPT ad tracking, that we run across every category we cover, including our own. We publish it because the shift from an ad-free category to a fast-monetising one happened inside a single month, and category-level movement this fast is worth putting in front of the platforms it affects. For how this compares with the highest-monetised category we track, see waste and hauling software's AI ad coverage, and for the full picture across every category, see which categories does ChatGPT monetise.
